Quote from Matt "it’s a state of mind"
ISSUE NUMBER ELEVEN AND A HALF– WEEK COMMENCING SOMETIME
MID JULY 2001

Firstly
my apologies for the awfully late edition of this little missive - what can I
say but the silly season is with us! Mad mad busy plus several days with no
internet access - don't forget that we are a village in the country - Favourite
food this week is Fasolia - that’s green beans in olive oil and tomatoes with
potatoes - fresh and good for you - its yummy. For a
good read about Village life and in Crete try "Riding the Minotaur"
by Scott Davies - I couldn't put it down - its full of so much interesting
stuff that I am going to have to read it again!! One quote in the book
"Lets not beat around the bush here your average Greek male would not
win any awards for his sensitivity and enlightenment towards women" TRAVEL
There have been several delays with various airplanes this week - the
odd one went tech. The good news is that all the pilots log books still balance
and no one has third degree burns from using the escape shute. So think,
whenever you deplane before departure, phew thanks Mr Pilot for spotting the
problem before we are at 30,000 feet! FULL
MOON? Apotheke had their full moon party on Wednesday, Pefki
community had their full moon party on Friday after the event we discovered
that full moon was actually on Thursday - it could only happen here? ARRIVALS Mary
arrived stayed for her birthday and left. Coming back soon via Heraklion
maybe Big Macs!! THE
WINE GUIDE Len advises me that Porfira have the wonderful Amethystos
Fume in stock - this wonderful wine is not always easily obtainable. |
BIG
MAC INDEX Yes Vassilis is our hero yet again!! You just cannot
imagine how much Sue and Daniela love a cold Big Mac. Danielas mum went to
Heraklion but did not bring Big Macs in case she gave us Mad Cow desease - no
comments please. CRETA
WAGGED HER TAIL Well she now wags her tail a lot at many different
people. Get this Sue gets a boing and a kiss. New addition Ann got a kiss
last week as well. Ron
and Margaret's Wedding Sorry no progress. However Ron is getting a bit
wild these days he actually pushed Daniela in the pool - that really
surprised everyone especially Daniela QUOTES
OF THE WEEK We have had some terrific winds this has caused the sun
loungers by the pool to go whizzing all over and K. Niko to spend many hours
a days fishing chairs out of the pool. BEAUTY
TIPS Olive oil is great for everything - having a manicure?
Use it to soften your cuticles - dry skin ? either use olive oil alone or mix
it with your normal body lotion or suntan lotion. HOUSEKEEPING
HINTS Now is the time to stock up on your honey. The hills here
are covered in purple thyme which looks beautiful and the bees are working
hard collecting - bee keepers in their white clothing are to be seen moving
hives. To avoid being stung they smoke the bees with dried animal dung - this
apparently makes the bees docile - bet you didn't know that. Progress
on Ann and Marks House WALLS - these guys have walls - stone and
everything - Ann has been to Sitia and picked the tiles!!! Wow do things move
in these parts. Hope
you enjoy this late and brief version - from a very hot and breezy but as
always gorgeous Mak - Ed |
FISH . We
still have four fish two gold and two are now white. FISHERMAN
JACKS We now have a "fishtail list" Niko has worked
out some amazing cocktails all based on fish titles - great fun especially on
happy hour days!! GREEK
IN 35 YEARS For your edification this week we have Pisconos or Kolos
both of which mean bottomStokos which is the white stuff you paint on your
roof to keep it cool. Mia Hari which means do me a favour not to be confused
with Mia Hara - I am fine. Koukla meaning babes or doll, Petalouda -
butterfly - Kipos - garden and finally Dentro - tree.
CULTURE Last
week Jianni Villea Reception came with us on the Pefki walk - Ourania who is
the keeper of the museum was so delighted to be able to speak Greek to someone
in our party she practicaly hugged him - much to his surprise I am now
pleased to report what hangs from the middle beam in the old school teachers
house at the Pefki folklore museum, it is either a basket with sweets in so
the children can't reach it or they hang string from a hook, pour wax down
and thus make the very large long candles used in churches!! No wonder I
could not understand it in broad Cretan. Thanks Jianni. Some of
you may know that getting someone to open the museum often presents a challenge
- this week was the classic we all arrive at the museum no Ourania nobody -
several mobile phone calls later plus Daniela sprinting down the hill to
Piperia - this time they LOST the key. Villea
