The E MESS – "Your Makrigialos Fix"

Quote from Matt "it’s a state of mind"

ISSUE NUMBER THIRTEEN COMMENCING - SILLY SEASON - 12 AUGUST 2001

LIFE IN THE COUNTRY!! It’s a privilege to live here [ I think!!] even when it’s the silly season - I know it’s the silly season in England as well because in yesterdays Telegraph a church in England refused to play Jerusalem at a wedding ceremony.

The island is so full this week that the electricity cannot keep up -, consequently fuses keep blowing all over the place and the local electricians are much in demand!!

TRAVEL TIPS The best time to visit Athens is the middle of August since most of the residents of that polluted metropolis are here!! The beach is absolutely solid. There is very little wind and its 32 plus in the shade. This is a difference from last week when the wind was blowing a 9 on the Beaufort scale.

QUOTE OF THE WEEK this week the acclaim goes to Mary for rendering us all speechless by saying "I don't like to interfere"

The Power station that is being built east of Goudaras is now scheduled for completion in 2003 - there was a lot of fuss about it a years or so back GreenPeace were involved in trying to persuade the government not to pollute this unspoiled part of Crete.

You all know that you cannot put anything other than bodily substances downs the loos here - in Minoan times it was not a problem and until now I have never had a really good explanation as to the regression of Greek plumbing. Now here it is - when the design for the first proper modern times plumbing was sent through to Greece it had been designed by an Engineer using inches - well when they built the system it was built in centimeters and thus you have to put the paper In a little basket by the loo.

BIG MAC INDEX Not a one but our website guy, who is Swedish, has a wonderful sense of humour the e mess is available via the Villea website and is bannered as Breaking news in "Big Mac"

CRETA WAGGED HER TAILCreta has taken a shine to Carmen however she still growls away happily at nearly everyone else!!

RON AND MARGARETS WEDDING One day I will have something to tell you all so I am leaving this section in.

Progress on Ann and Marks House Ann and Mark are back in town and report excellent progress - looks like a November house warming party. There is still a telegraph pole in the middle of what will be the sitting room but the architect promises this will be shifted within the next two weeks - fingers crossed.

GREEK IN 35 YEARS This week is very easy because we are going to concentrate on words that are familiar to you since the English equivalent is not dissimilar.

Platyodia, this means flat foot, you will all know of the platypus! Plethora is plethora Cosmos means people, Pepsis means digestion, fos means light [ phosphorescence ] Phenomenon same word in Greek as in English. .Necrophilia is the same word. Camel is camilo and one of my favourites which is not quite the same is Camilopardalus which is a giraffe. Potamos is river as in Hippopotamos which is river horse.

Villea had two kittens who came from Miramare, cute little things, one is called Mittens the other was called Scrawny - I say was since this poor little thing was killed by a territorial tom car.

TIMS BICYLCLE Its not been swimming this week but Tim reports there are more rusty patches than before.

FISH The count was two - sadly the one that went white that tried to die last week was floating on the top - very dead. Thanks Mark for getting it out of the tank. The other fish did not seem to be bothered that one of their number had joined the choir eternal.

FISHERMAN JACKS Thanks Ann for bringing great "fish stuff " from England - we will soon have a fine collection of assorted fishes.

SITIA As I guess everyone knows the small airport is being extended to take jets - unfortunately this means that lots and lots of dust is being produced and the proud house wives of Sitia are complaining since the wind dumps large amounts of dust on the town. Wait till they get ancient Boeings landing at three in the morning!!!

CULTURE The only [ as far as we now ] organic raki in the village will be produced this Thursday at Raki Night. I know this because yesterday whilst wandering in the bowels of Villea what do I find but K. Niko trampling grapes in his bare feet. The grapes in question had been picked from the terrace of one of the apartments the day before - can't wait for this weeks raki

SHOOTING STARS Out in the middle of no where by Lithines the sky is amazing - Last night and again tonight there will be loads of shooting stars to be seen. The best place to be will be in the middle of nowhere - as far as possible away from any ground light.
