The E MESS – "Your Makrigialos Fix"

Quote from Matt "it’s a state of mind"

ISSUE NUMBER NINE– WEEK COMMENCING MONDAY 18TH JUNE 2001

The weekly Messenger that was distributed locally, having, as you all know caused lots of grief is no more - This little paper was produced purely for fun and with the hope of keeping the people who would like to live here but can't, updated and , hopefully encouraging people who . who have visited once to become "Makriadicts".

The Messenger was conceived by myself, Len and Daniela - over a beer or six in Hani, it was done in a seriously positive manner and was never intended to cause any upset.

Don't forget to check out Mats site on explore crete.com which is gallery of pictures of Mak and its environs - including the picture of Apotheke with the chair on the wall!!!

Thanks this week go to a certain Taverna on "Bamboo Legs Beach" who kindly drove Sue and Mikle home after an excellent lunch.

Really exiting news!!! Daniela and Andonis and Ann all now have air conditioning - the only thing that disappoints me about this is the fact that some weeks ago Len said "you cannot possibly live in those apartments without air con" - I just hate it when people are proved so right!!

I know you all want the weather report - Pegasus did not go today its blowing about 7 Beaufort - however it is still very hot.

Some of you will remember a drink called a "California Suicide" - well its under experimentation back in California. It may eventually make the cocktail list at Fisherman Jacks

BIRTHDAYS what a lot this week - tomorrow is Mikles, Thursday Sandra and Friday Daniela!! - Mikles surprise party is at Porfira at midnight - thanks to Sue Lane for phoning and telling us - secretive bugger our Mikle but he can't half paint.

HOUSEKEEPING HINTS - Sorry nothing new this week - we are just carrying on with get Margaret or get Margaret more often

THE BIG MAC INDEX None so far but we are onto a promise as Vassilis will be in Heraklion after 11 am on Thursday - keep your fingers crossed!!!!

CRETA WAGGED HER TAIL Poor old Creta is not allowed inside in Sailing - and does she ever like the lights in there!!! She will get a new yellow scarf later today - bought on impulse on girls night out in Ierpetra.

Ron and Margaret's Wedding this is still on hold but is being avidly pursued - Rons family are here at the moment so he is a doting granddad!

More people returning to Mak are Maria and Loreen from Canada - hope they have as good a time as last year - no - the year before last - we are all looking forward to seeing them again.

POETRY - commemoration

On the road from Iereperta to Ano Vianos is a memorial to the villagers of Crete who were murdered during the German occupation. When I visited this moving memorial a few weeks ago I copied the translation of the inscription - I would like to share this with you - don't be ashamed to cry when you read it -

By passer, stay guarded here lie dead

Who never betrayed, who never lied

By passer stay, stay guarded and with lucid spirit study them

What if you enjoy the light

And if you walk full of courage

And if you love and are loved

And whatever good

You have in life

Was offered to you

by those dead

THE CULTURE SECTION If you have not yet visited the museums here you must do so on your next visit. We have the School Room and the School Teachers house in Pefki - both very beautifully done and you will be shown around by Ourania [ this means Heaven or Sky - not quite sure which ]. Its marvelous to see the pride that Ourania and her fellow villagers have in their beautiful museum.

On the road to Koutsouras up to the right is the excellent little Agricultural Museum at Magatzes - Manolis has an eclectic collection of artifacts used in the locality over the years - you will be hard pressed to guess what some of them are for !!!

FISH - we still have four goldfish - that’s quite amazing!!

FISHERMAN JACKS Its getting nearer - Mikle arrived from England with a marvelous sign saying Fisherman Jacks - the motto of the bar as you may remember is " A woman needs a man like a fish needs a bicycle" Mikle is also busy doing fish shaped stencils so we can put fish everywhere - if you are coming to Mak and have any weird objects with fish on pls bring them - thanks.

GREEK IN 35 YEARS

A Psarama is fishing, Psaras is a fisherman, Angistri is a hook, Diktia is nets. A fishing boat is Psarovarka.

Koupia is oars not to be confused with Kounoupi which is a mosquito.

Paragadi - which is a fishing line with lots of hooks on [ it can be 100's].

Welcome to our new reader Claire - and Paul in Ca - got to send you a copy of this just for the California Suicide being re-exported!!!
